A year after a brutal attack, ex-detective Huw and wife Alice hide away in a coastal home. Their daughter Margot plans to move in with boyfriend Sam, but letters from imprisoned serial killer Patrick shatter their peace.

Patrick escalates his mind games against Huw and Margot after Jackie breaks into Margot's flat, defaces Sam's photos. Using Margot's private thoughts as weapons, Patrick exploits her fears while Margot suspects Huw of enabling him.

Huw finds evidence that Jonathan wasn't murdered and Patrick faked his confession. Huw hides this discovery. When Jenny suspects his motives, he secretly works to remove her from the case. Margot pleads with him to stop, but he refuses.
