The Networks Are Eager to Get You On Demand and Off Your DVR

As the fall TV season gets underway, you're going to hear a lot about "live-plus-3-day" and "live-plus-7-day" ratings in the coming weeks. More viewers are watching TV on a delayed basis, and network executives would prefer that everyone stop talking about next-day ratings, which don't capture the full audience snapshot, and instead wait to include several more days of time-shifted viewing.

Ask Matt: Shondaland Thursday, Madam Secretary vs. Race, Superheroes, Outlander and More

Send questions and comments to askmatt@tvguidemagazine.com and follow me on Twitter! Question: I'm wondering what you think about the scheduling of ABC's Thursday night programming. I don't even KNOW if there's a Family Hour any more, but it seems to me that Scandal is pretty heavy on the sex and violence and may not work so well at the 8 pm (Central) hour. Do you see ABC getting complaints about it and possibly switching Scandal and How To Get Away With Murder? — Jan

Crisis' Rachael Taylor: I Hope Viewers "Love to Hate" My Character

There's not a lot of time for character development in the pilot episode of Crisis, NBC's hostage thriller that premieres Sunday. The first hour is more preoccupied with immersing viewers into the action and getting a couple of major twists out of the way than delving into the depths of its major players. But here's what we do know: A bus of children is taken hostage by a group of highly trained criminals while on a field trip. What do the bad guys want? It's unclear. But the children's parents all hold positions of power in Washington, D.C., ranging from the CEO of a major corporation (Gillian Anderson) to the president of the United States. There's also a nearly unrecognizable Dermot Mulroney playing a shlubby parent chaperone who's an embarrassment to his daughter, but who defies expectations when it comes to the events that unfold. And in a made-for-TV coincidence, the no-nonsense FBI agent in charge of the case, Susie Dunn (Rachael Taylor), is the estranged sister of Anderson's character, Meg Fitch.

Cougar Town's Brian Van Holt on Directing Matthew Perry's Guest Spot: I Was Nervous For Sure

Cougar Town star Brian Van Holt had plenty of reasons to be nervous about the directing the second episode of the sitcom's fifth season. Not only was Tuesday's episode (10/9c, TBS) Holt's directorial debut, but he was also tasked with directing Friends alum Matthew Perry's highly anticipated guest appearance. "100 percent I was nervous for sure," Holt tells TVGuide.com. "But Matthew is...

From The Returned to The Bridge, Viewers Adjust to Subtitles As TV Gets More Global

When Sundance Channel acquired the French-language zombie series The Returned, network president Sarah Barnett was concerned about how viewers might react. Not about the subject matter — the show came with high critical acclaim, and the success of The Walking Dead proved that audiences could stomach undead antics.

Stiehm, who was one of the original writers on the Showtime drama, left after Season 2 to run The Bridge with Elwood Reid. Send questions and comments to askmatt@tvguidemagazine.com and follow me on Twitter! Question: Love your column and hope you could shed some light on an issue for me. As I understand it, TV shows/actors submit one episode of what they feel is their best work (that season) for Emmy consideration. Is this true? If so, don't you think the criteria should require a greater sample size since one episode, no matter the quality, does not necessarily tell the story of an entire season? —Charles

The Bridge's Eric Lange Goes Inside the Mind of a Killer

After last week's big reveal on FX's The Bridge -- in which viewers learned the killer was none other than "Kenneth Hastings" (a.k.a. David Tate), the co-worker who's been romancing the wife of Det. Marco Ruiz (Demian Bichir) -- one looming question remains: What is Tate's endgame? Is he motivated merely by a personal vendetta against Marco (who was having an affair with Tate's wife when she was killed in a car crash years prior), or is there a larger political agenda to his actions? Both, according to Eric Lange, who plays the murderer. "The personal is political," Lange tells TVGuide.com.

Toni Collette's Watchlist: Which Classic Show Helped Her Perfect an American Accent?

Hostages star Toni Collette credits The Brady Bunch with helping her to perfect her American accent. The Bridge's Ted Levine: "The Killer Is More Hannibal Lecter Than Jame Gumb"

In this week's episode of FX's The Bridge, viewers finally learn what happened to Sonya's (Diane Kruger) sister years ago, and about the "mistake" related to the case that brought Sonya and Hank (Ted Levine) together. "It's an interesting past, these two, in the way that they met, and it is a lot to be revealed," Levine tells TVGuide.com. "He bears a tremendous amount of regret concerning that thing, and it changed his perspective on a number of things, on justice and retribution. Knowing Sonya and having sort of been thrust into this relationship with her under these circumstances, it's kind of changed him."

Inside FX's Fascinating New Mystery The Bridge

At first glance, FX's new drama The Bridge seems like a tough sell: a brusque female lead on the autism spectrum, yet another serial killer wreaking havoc and a setting in which nearly half the dialogue has to be in Spanish with English subtitles.

FX's The Bridge Is More Than Your Average Serial Killer Drama

FX's The Bridge looks, sounds and feels like another "Important with a capital I" show (think Breaking Bad, Homeland, The Americans), but like the best of this breed of cable shows, its entertainment value trumps whatever message it's trying to convey. The message is still there, of course — in this case, involving murder, corruption and cultural prejudices along the U.S./Mexican border — but the issues are wrapped up in an easily digestible format that relies on characters rather than lessons to draw viewers in.

Send questions and comments to askmatt@tvguidemagazine.com and follow me on Twitter! Question: I, like many others, read the novel Under the Dome and was sorely disappointed with the ending. I read an article about changes that are coming to the TV version. I was glad about that and am now going to give it a try. But I also read that it may become a series instead of a 13-episode miniseries. Is that true? I'd much rather this be a miniseries as opposed to a series lasting multiple seasons. The story doesn't really lend itself well to playing out over several years. Do you know if it will continue past 13 episodes? — Beth
