In 1844 Ireland, a rogue falls for a squire's daughter, altering her destiny. Angels send them to present-day Providence Falls to correct it. He must make her fall for another man, though she's now a cop with no memory of their past lives.

Liam has just arrived in present day Providence Falls having just learned that he has been in literal limbo for close to two hundred years, and that his eternal resting place is tied to getting the reincarnated souls of Cora, the love of his life whose heart he stole, and her fated match, Finn, together, Cora who has just become a police detective and Finn who she knows and seems to like as an Assistant DA. Making his life more difficult is that he has been given a present day back story, including with other reincarnated souls from his past, without knowing that back story, and that he has no idea of the workings of present day life (cell phones? cars?). Samael has put into place safeguards just in case Liam has his own idea of getting back together with Cora himself. The role Samael has put him in is as her new detective partner, their initial case(s) a series of larcenies, with the first three being home invasions, with the most recent being a jewelry store. As Cora and Liam work on the case, Cora can't help but think she's seen one of the stolen pieces, a necklace, before, and can't help but wonder if Liam was the person she saw in her recent rather bizarre dream of a past time. Liam also can't help but see history repeat itself, meaning bad things if he does get back together with Cora, his love for her which led to her death in 1844.

Detectives Cora and Liam must solve a murder. Meanwhile, despite Liam's hidden love for Cora, he pushes her toward DA Finn Walsh, her fated match, in order to change their destinies.

With the jewelry story larceny case solved (although the three seemingly unrelated home larceny cases not), Cora and Liam move onto their next case, that of the killing of John Brady, Merideth's soon-to-be ex-husband. His death places some apprehension in Liam in his mission in it only being the latest thing to mimic what happened in his life in 1844, his biggest fear being Cora herself and if she will die at the hands of his actions yet again. Placing Merideth in a bad light is the fact that she has gone missing. With the mission itself, Liam is trying his hardest with Cora and Finn despite he still admitting his feelings for her, and hers seemingly in return for him, even with he pulling away at most opportunities when they get too close. In asking for a favor, Cora sees another side of Finn she has never known of or even suspected. A further wrinkle in the mission is a former wannabe love interest reentering Cora's life, former Providence Falls Police Detective Magnus Cartwright, a proverbial "bad boy" like him. Samael fears that Magnus' entrance is the work of "the other side", namely Bael of, as Agon so quaintly refers, "H E double hockey sticks".

Samael and Agon are up front with Liam about the true nature of his mission with regard to Cora, Finn only associated to her true destiny which centers on her charity, Second Chances. It, however, does not change his end goal of getting Cora and Finn together. Samael also informs Agon that there is extra pressure on him to come through with Liam in that Gabriel is closely watching the case. On the flip side, Bael does show some of his cards in making it clear that he is indeed working on the case toward his own ends, he at least demonstrating that he is assisting Magnus, but he does not divulge the name of his human operative. But as Cora and Liam and to some extent Finn work on the John Brady death, Merideth's disappearance, and the three outstanding larcenies, Cora can't still help but feel that her destiny is with Liam despite whatever he may be hiding from her.
