Dave Willis is an apprentice architect living in San Francisco, and he is earning only $85.37 per week. One day, the young man accidentally drops his sandwich into the bag of a passing young woman. He chases after her to retrieve the sandwich, but he starts falling for her during their initial conversation. The lady is art student Julie Hammond, and she has yet to get a no steady job. The two new lovers decide to marry anyway. Due to their lack of funds, the newlyweds decide to rent a cheap, unfurnished apartment with no windows. Its only perk is the easy access to a rooftop with a panoramic view of the city. The couple has problems with two regular visitors to their apartment, who tend to outstay their welcome. The first one is Julie's wealthy father Fred Hammond. He was a talented and successful salesman, and he currently owns nine used car lots. Unwilling to let his daughter suffer in poverty, Fred is constantly trying to offer financial assistance to the young couple. He has no faith in their ability to survive on their own. The couple's second regular visitor is their neighbor, the eccentric inventor Stan Parker. He has befriended the couple, but he uses their friendship as a pretext to enter their apartment unannounced and to discuss with them his overly-optimistic plans in detail.
