Home Fires
The drama follows a group of inspirational women in a rural Cheshire community where the shadow of World War II is casting a dark cloud over their lives. The isolated village couldn't feel further away from the impending bloodshed and battlefields and yet it is not immune from the effects of war. As the conflict takes hold, and separates the women from their husbands, fathers, sons and brothers, the women find themselves under increasing and extraordinary pressures in a rapidly fragmenting world.

June 1940. Laura is dismissed from the RAF following her affair with the married Bowers, though her sister Kate has better news for herself and her father, whilst Alison is made a tempting offer. The Brindsleys are anxious as to the fate of David, whose ship was torpedoed. Sarah is pleased that Nick has returned safely from Dunkirk, but receives an unsettling telegram regarding her husband, and Pat, whose bullying spouse is still away, befriends lonely widowed Czech soldier Marek Novotny. Claire and Spencer marry in secret, though it is not a secret for long, whilst Frances Barden receives a terrible shock.
