This Danish drama series follows the intricate, complicated lives of the politicians, media spinners, and reporters who feed off their triumphs and failures in 'Borgen' (the Castle)--the nickname for Denmark's parliamentary building. In the first episode, Denmark is preparing for parliamentary elections and Birgitte Nyborg, facing her first election as party leader, decides at the last minute to head in her own direction.

Birgitte Nyborg is the newly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs, when oil is suddenly found in Greenland. But Nyborg has gone to the polls on a green agenda, and for her there is no doubt that the oil project must be shut down as soon as possible. Voices in Greenland - led by the Greenlandic government minister Hans Eliassen - are, however, of a completely different opinion. And so is Nyborg's boss, Prime Minister Signe Kragh.
