Tokyo has been sunk into the ocean, along with most of the world, during a large-scale land subsidence! Aika Sumeragi is a salvager who works for a small company run by a father and daughter tandem. Alas, the company isn't exactly successful, and money is needed desperately. Thus, Aika accepts the very dangerous job of acquiring an artifact called Lagu for a hefty sum. The boss's daughter Aida Rion joins Aika on this particular mission, and the two set off.

Paradigm City, a city of amnesia and a place of belonging. It remains populated by forgotten pasts and the ruins of their labors due to a calamity 40 years ago. Shrouded in a fog-like mystery, it is up to people like Roger Smith to shine a light through the mist. By his side are Norman, a loyal and widely skilled butler, and Dorothy, a human-like android with deadpan snark. Together with the relic Big O, a jet-black mecha of gargantuan size and weight, they help Roger serve iron justice to Paradigm's lurking villains as he discovers the truth about 40 years ago.

Renton Thurston is a 14-year-old boy who lived with his mechanic grandfather in a backwater town. Every day he dreamed of being with the mercenary "Light Finding Operation (LFO)" aircraft pilot group "Gekkostate" and riding "Trapar" particle waves-- a sport called "Riffing"-- with their charismatic leader Holland, especially when faced with his father's acclaimed past or his grandfather's desire to protect him. When a young girl named Eureka riding the original LFO, the "Nirvash typeZERO", asks his grandfather for a tune-up, she inadvertently brings the attention of the military to the garage; as a result, the garage is destroyed and Renton is forced to deliver a new type of interface-- the "Amita Drive"-- to the Nirvash. After a heated fight in which the Nirvash destroys the military LFOs by unleashing an immense amount of power, Renton is invited into Gekkostate. However, he quickly realizes that behind the facade of a traveling group of mercenaries is a very bitter reality.

Sogoru Kyo is a normal high school student with great passion for the things he holds dear. In fact, his love for swimming is so great he is attempting to single-handedly keep the team alive. However, his life takes an unexpected twist when meets a strange girl at the pool whose existence shows him an enemy force that is threatening the very existence of humanity. These beings known as GARDS-OMS seek to eliminate humanity and take Earth for their own. His choice is to live as he has been, or take a place in the cockpit of a mecha to stop the extinction of humanity. They often say the truth will set you free, but in this case the truth may destroy Kyo and leave his beloved hometown without the hero it so desperately needs.

When Keitaro was a child, he was friends with a little girl. When the girl had to move away, the two made a promise to meet each other at Tokyo University when they grew up. Years later, Keitaro has failed his entrance exam twice, and his parents refuse to support him any longer. His grandmother gives him refuge and employment as caretaker of her inn, which just happens to serve as a female dormitory. The eclectic group of tenants tease, annoy and berate him to no end. Still, Keitaro won't ever give up his promise to meet his childhood friend again, even though he can't remember her name.

The future Earth; with over 80% having been annihilated in a great war, the rest live under the dominion of a race known as The Third. These beings possess a third Space Eye on their foreheads, and watch over the Earth and it's remaining populace, granting it a limited amount of technology; those who infringe on the so-called Technos Taboo are harshly dealt with. Meanwhile, Honoka, a desert wanderer, along with her sand tank's sentient AI, Bogie, makes her living as a jack-of-all-trades, performing whatever tasks folks may require. This ranges from simple deliveries and escorts to giant insect exterminations. The only task she refuses to do is take human life. Nonetheless, her skill and grace with the katana has earned her the name "Sword Dancer". However, upon rescuing a quiet wanderer named Iks, who also holds the attention of the Third, she finds herself starting to think more deeply about her own inner thoughts and emotions.
