Doug Harris and Peter Saarinen meet when they are both in the same on campus residence at the University of Toronto, Doug a popular upperclassman with an established group of friends on campus including longtime girlfriend Bev, and introverted Peter a freshman. Apologizing for his role in a freshman initiation prank on Peter, Doug befriends him and takes him under his wings in seeing that Peter doesn't possess the socialization skills to make friends easily among their peers. As they spend more time together, Doug sees that Peter doesn't not possess those socialization skills, but feels comfortable enough in his own skin not to feel the need to be the center of attention or a social butterfly, which Doug admires in him. Regardless, Doug seems to be Peter's only real friend in all his other acquaintances met through Doug primarily through residence. When Peter eventually has a social circle made outside of Doug, Doug is able to see his feelings for Peter in a clearer light, which he may not want to admit to himself and which is more evident through his behavior rather than his actions or words.
