Gaetano Gargiuolo (Toni Servillo) runs a rural prison in Italy. The facility is set to close due to structural defects and because the building no longer meets current prison standards. Because of bureaucratic delays, some staff members and inmates must wait longer than expected for their transfer. A dozen inmates and a few guards form a group of people among whom a new dynamic suddenly emerges. Gaetano clearly sees himself as the ultimate authority, but his most famous inmate, Carmine Lagioia (Silvio Orlando), begins to question this. Not through rebellion, but rather by challenging Gaetano and his staff philosophically. In addition, Carmine is dissatisfied with the food served to him and the other inmates, and fights his way into the prison kitchen. When one evening all the inmates and guards are trapped in a single room due to a power outage and eat together, the boundaries between the inmates and their guards become increasingly blurred.
