Sacrifice
After a fourth miscarriage, Dr. Tora Hamilton follows her husband to Unst, a remote Shetland island, where they must live for a year before adopting, and she takes a consultant surgeon post at the local hospital while still raw from loss. One morning she finds a dead horse in the field and uses a backhoe to bury it, only to strike something solid in the peat. What she clears away is a preserved young woman, marked with strange symbols and missing her heart. Tora reports it, but the police prefer an ancient ritual explanation, and she cannot let it lie.
