Martinis & Murder

The primary creative forces, both in front of and behind the camera, talk about the making of the four Donald Strachey Mystery movies, based on a book series with the lead, title character a gay private detective. They talk about the decision to make the series reminiscent of movie noirs of the 1930s and 1940s, but with present day sensibilities. As this "making of" documentary is being filmed concurrently with the third and fourth films, much of the discussion is specifically on details of those two films, Ice Blues (2008) and On the Other Hand, Death (2008), and how they have evolved from the first two. As the two central items with the movies are the genre aspect of being mysteries and central characters being two very different gay men in a stable, loving relationship, director Ron Oliver and star Chad Allen, both gay men, talk about the gay aspect of the series, their want to have it be incidental to the stories, yet have it be a positive portrayal much like their own respective personal lives unlike many gay themed movies which focus on the distress of homosexuality.
