His family suffered greatly following the stock market crash of 1929, causing him to worry that he would not be able to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming an actor

Eventually moved on to television in the 1950s and would appear on numerous hit programs including "The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour", "Zorro" and later ABC's "Batman", starring as the infamous Joker
Initially confined to typical Latin roles throughout the earliest parts of his career, he would eventually make a name for himself throughout the '30s and '40s in numerous Westerns
Enlisted in the U․S․ Coast Guard in 1942 and was aboard the USS Cavalier during it's assault in 1943
Refused to shave his mustache for the role of Joker on "Batman", so the makeup department was forced to apply heavy amounts of white makeup over it during filming
