  • His family suffered greatly following the stock market crash of 1929, causing him to worry that he would not be able to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming an actor

  • Initially confined to typical Latin roles throughout the earliest parts of his career, he would eventually make a name for himself throughout the '30s and '40s in numerous Westerns
  • Eventually moved on to television in the 1950s and would appear on numerous hit programs including "The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour", "Zorro" and later ABC's "Batman", starring as the infamous Joker
  • Enlisted in the U․S․ Coast Guard in 1942 and was aboard the USS Cavalier during it's assault in 1943
  • Refused to shave his mustache for the role of Joker on "Batman", so the makeup department was forced to apply heavy amounts of white makeup over it during filming
