Poppy finds love letters to her late mother Elinor from an "Alexander" whom she learns is her birth father upon showing Shreve, who confirms that Elinor was indeed pregnant with her some time before meeting Shreve. He explains that four years after he and Elinor married, she had left him to return to Alexander Michael Troy, but had ultimately decided that Shreve was the better man to be a father to her and Alexander's illegitimate daughter: Poppy.
