In Coleraine in 1990 dentist Colin Howell is a leading member of the Baptist church, married to Lesley with children. He becomes attracted to teacher Hazel Buchanan, also married - to policeman Trevor - and they embark upon an affair, Colin justifying it as being God's will. They are found out by the church's pastor John Hansford and agree to end things but continue to see each other, Hazel finding herself pregnant. Lesley's father gives her a cheque for over two hundred thousand pounds to leave Colin but when he discovers it this gives Colin the idea for a shocking plan of action.
