NYPD Detective Avi Avraham is clueless captain Kathleen Davies's best man, specialized in missing persons and unrivaled as passive-aggressive interviewer, but a controversial maverick. Ambitious Janine Harris asked to be teamed-up to learn from him, yet can't resist petty criticism. Veteran detective Earl Malzone also cooperates, relying on traditional methods. High school nerd Vincent Conte's mother Nora reports him missing, Avi sees through her pretense of a happy family, learning father Leonard rowed with him the previous day. An interview confirms he has excessive expectations of extracurricular activities to get into Ivy League and considers Vincent a weakling. Meanwhile would be-novelist Zack Miller is frustrated as his part-time writing class instructor tells him to choose another calling for his limited writing talent, wife Dania, initially kept in the dark, encourages him to persevere.
