Returning from the Great War Perce explains how, as a hospital orderly, he witnessed the terrible injuries of his colleagues, and met officer Terence, with whom he shared a loving, idyllic afternoon. Back in England the two men meet again, on a station platform - the same location where Perce once saw Oscar Wilde being taken to gaol, but theirs will be a brief encounter.

Missing his train home, he spends the night with an older man, Marcus. He reflects on the disappointments, excitement, and ironies of his trip, underscored by anxiety that news coverage of the event might have been seen by his parents.

A single mother at sixteen Alice meets Michael at church and they marry but she soon realizes he is more interested in men, a fact his parents knew when encouraging the wedding to mask his sexuality. Alice feels better when they have a child and she is tolerant of his male partners. Now, in 1957, the Wolfenden report seems to offer Michael hope but in his own way he still loves Alice and they stay together.

Now that homosexuality is decriminalized Jackie knows he is getting past it but still relishes the days when pleasure was snatched in secret.

Having arrived in London from the West Indies three years earlier to study law and enjoying the sexual freedom it offered Fredrick, sheltering from the Blitz, tells his story, including being painted in the nude by artist lover Andrew. As the bombs fall Fredrick survives, thanks to pursuing a sexual encounter with a stranger, rather than visiting his usual night spot, which takes a direct hit.

Dressing as a man changed everything when she gained a reputation for comforting lonely wives but unfortunately she comes unstuck when a young girl falls for her, wanting sex, and her secret is exposed.
