The Man on the Platform

Back in England the two men meet again, on a station platform - the same location where Perce once saw Oscar Wilde being taken to gaol, but theirs will be a brief encounter.

He reflects on the disappointments, excitement, and ironies of his trip, underscored by anxiety that news coverage of the event might have been seen by his parents.

Now, in 1957, the Wolfenden report seems to offer Michael hope but in his own way he still loves Alice and they stay together.

Having arrived in London from the West Indies three years earlier to study law and enjoying the sexual freedom it offered Fredrick, sheltering from the Blitz, tells his story, including being painted in the nude by artist lover Andrew. As the bombs fall Fredrick survives, thanks to pursuing a sexual encounter with a stranger, rather than visiting his usual night spot, which takes a direct hit.
