George Beaumont is being blackmailed by an insurance investigator, Harry Folsom. Beaumont throws him out but his girlfriend Ruth Whittaker gives him $7000 to just go away. In Los Angeles, Perry Mason is shocked when Della mentions that George Beaumont called him while he was out as Beaumont was supposed to have been killed in a plane crash three years before. Beaumont had in fact missed the flight that crashed but as he and his wife had not been getting along, he decided to start a new life. He's now returned to Los Angeles intent on making contact with his wife Laura, now a successful businesswoman. When Beaumont is found dead, however, it's Ruth Whittaker who is charged with murder and Perry agrees to defend her.

When Lawrence Balfour thinks his wife is having an affair, he follows her to a remote cabin. When she leaves, he attempts to confront her lover but in the darkness, his gun goes off and the man falls to the ground. In a panic he returns homes and calls the family's fixer, Steven Boles, who collects the body and makes it look like a road accident. The next day, Lawrence Balfour's nephew Ted is arrested and eventually convicted of manslaughter. Ted has no recollection whatsoever of the night in question when a man was run over with his car and accepted a plea bargain. Perry Mason is hired by the patriarch of the Balfour family, the elderly Addison Balfour, to find a way to have that conviction overturned. After Perry makes it clear he will not cooperate with Boles after Boles tells Perry the true facts, Perry is discharged by the family. When the police realize that the victim wasn't run over but was in fact shot, Ted is charged with murder and decides he still wants Perry to represent him.

Frank Anderson and partner visit three time loser Art Crowley with a bottle of whiskey to entice him to join them in a robbery. Anderson offers to pay $700 but tears the seven bills in half so that Crowley receives the rest after the robbery. The three rob the Hargrove Finance Company the next day. They hold the three employees at gunpoint in the noisy office with a bad air conditioning fan. The manager Charles Hays refuses to open the safe so Anderson knocks him out and has "Pop" open the safe while Crowley acts as a guard. Fourteen year old Nicky Renzi sees Anderson hide the money in an abandoned house near his. After taking the money, he visits Perry to see if he can keep the money but Perry is unable to answer due to Nicky's limited answers. Nicky shows the money to his grandfather Anthony Renzi who tells him they must turn it over to the police. At that moment the police arrive. They have found Anderson dead in the abandoned house along with a crowbar bearing Renzi's initials. A second search turns up the final $12,000 hidden in the flour. Perry must overcome eye witnesses who tell an unlikely story.

An investigation is launched when U.S. currency that was supposed to have been destroyed in the Philippines during World War II starts to appear in circulation in the vicinity of an Army base. The officer in charge of the base cashiers office, Major Frank Lessing, has been acting odd lately and his senior Sergeant Joseph Dexter has just about had it. He asks for a transfer which Lessing approves. When his wife Helen Lessing goes to the office late one night she finds him dead at his desk with a gun in one hand and a suicide note in the other. She quickly covers up the suicide to make it look like a murder. Perry Mason shows up at the base that morning as Maj. Lessing had requested the previous evening. Mrs. Lessing eventually tells him of the cover-up and offers to pay for Sgt. Dexter's defense now that he has been charged with her husband's murder.

Nurse Rhoda Reynolds has a secret from her past that she wants to keep from her husband Carl, and she's prepared to pay several thousand dollars to Artie Kane to do so. Carl is something of a milquetoast but very much in love with her; he married her against his domineering father Philip's wishes, and Philip never hides his distaste for his son's choice. Upon the recommendation of friend Dr. Michael Harris, Rhoda visits Perry Mason to ask questions about a "friend's" marital status, but Perry realizes she really talking about herself--and might not, in fact, be legally married to Carl. Rhoda keeps a 2AM rendezvous with Artie to tell him she can't pay his latest ransom demand, and he wrests her very expensive wedding ring from her. A neighbor hears the noise of their fight and calls the police, but when Artie's found dead with the ring in his hand, Rhoda is charged with his murder and Perry defends her with unusual methods.

While his father-in-law Dr. Blane who is chairman of the bank board talks with a bank officer, Jack Hardisty working at the bank calmly steals $100,000 in cash from the bank vault as he closes up and leaves the bank. He is to join his wife and Dr. Blane at his summer house for supper but is late. After he arrives, he has a chat with Dr. Blane which turns into a loud argument. Jack confesses he took the money and with bank examiners coming next week he would like Dr. Blane to help payback the money that he spent on gambling. Dr. Blane calls Perry to get Paul Drake to help investigate. Perry and Della will also visit Dr. Blane that evening to help. Paul's man lost Jack's trail so Paul goes to Jack's house where he finds Dr. Blane searching the house and Jack shot dead. They then call the Sheriff. The murder weapon turns out to be a pistol a neighbor loaned to Dr. Blane as well as Jack and Sue but was missing from Dr. Blane's car. Sue is having an affair with the neighbor Philip Strague. With Dr. Blane the only person who seems to have the time to kill Jack and the missing money, Dr. Blane is charged with murder.

Danny Harrison arrives home as his wife Eileen is upset about their washer being repossessed. Danny is a schoolteacher who works two jobs and has a young daughter who requires an expensive leg brace. Danny won't go to Eileen's father for help or take a better paying job so Eileen tells him she wants a divorce for their daughter's sake. Eileen visits Perry to see if he will help her obtain the divorce as the two were childhood friends. Perry refuses but offers other help as she leaves his office. Danny's second job is at Luke Hickey's small diner which is hurting financially. Danny's friend Frank Curran comes into the diner drunk ordering chili and coffee. The drunk Curran tosses the chili in the floor complaining about it. Hickey wants to call the police but Danny offers to take Frank home. First Luke takes a dollar from Frank who has a wad of cash including $500 bills. Danny takes Frank home leaving him in his apartment after getting the attention of neighbor Phil McCabe. The next day Frank is found murdered and Danny is charged with the motive being the missing money.

Johnny Starr is having an affair with Gloria Barton, wife of jockey Francis 'Tic' Barton. Starr, involved in bookmaking, wants Gloria to ask Tic to throw a race for $10,000. Gloria approaches Tic that evening to throw the race but Tic, who is on a comeback, refuses to throw it even though Gloria threatens divorce. Tic then visits Perry for advice. That evening, Tic receives a message from Gloria via the assistant trainer to call her at Starr's apartment. During the race, Tic and the horse make a move toward first but, according to Tic, the horse didn't have it in him. After losing the race, the owner Dion Bannion fires everyone involved feeling he was robbed of the victory. Tic, believing Starr 'fixed' the horse, visits Starr at his apartment with his gun. However, the strong Starr easily overpowers the diminutive Tic and throws him out of the apartment. Recovering in the hallway Tic hears first one gunshot and then a second from the apartment. As he tries to leave, a neighbor sees him in the hallway and later says he saw Starr with Gloria. Tic is charged with murder and Perry defends him.

Milo Girard is a high-end art dealer who is less than honest. He's recently sold a painting, The Purple Woman, to avid collector and self-described expert Rufus Varner, for $86,000. When another art expert tells Varner he's purchased a forgery, he wants his money back but Girard laughs him off and threatens to expose his gullibility. Girard commissioned the forgery from frustrated artist Aaron Hubble to whom he promised a one man show if he could produce a painting that would fool Varner. Having met his side of the bargain, Hubble now wants his show but Girard refuses. Girard's wife Evelyn learns about the forgeries and seeks legal advice from Perry Mason. She fails to tell him that she is having an affair and that she hated her husband. When Girard is murdered, there is no shortage of suspects but it's Evelyn who is charged and Perry defends her.

Charles Brewster, Vice President of of the business management firm Hyatt, Brewster and Hyatt, is an embezzler having spent $300,000 of clients funds. He put the expenditures through the company accounts but destroyed the evidence. Martin Ellis, comptroller for the firm, was convicted of the crime as he had no proof Brewster is the culprit. Jonathan Hyatt knows Brewster is guilty but he is married to the elder Hyatt's daughter Valerie, an alcoholic. Ellis' wife Carolyn Pulaski Ellis approaches Perry Mason after she receives a roll of microfilm with copies of the bills that disappeared. When Brewster is found dead, Martin Ellis is charged with murder and Perry defends him. The case is difficult because Brewster's ring has blood from where he hit Ellis in the face as Ellis visited Brewster before he was murdered and the Ellis marriage is found to be invalid.

Charles Sabin is a wealthy investor who has a rather gruff personality. He is leaving on a fishing trip to a remote cabin he owns but as he leaves he accuses his step-daughter Helen Watkins of stealing from him. He has a pet parrot Casanova who does a couple of tricks and parrots some funny answers. As he leaves he gives orders to his secretary Richard Waid to handle some tasks. Sabin is found dead in his cabin with a parrot saying Helen should turn over a gun. Sabin's wife Stephanie Sabin along with Helen visit Perry who handles some of Sabin's legal business for help. Perry visits the cabin where the Sheriff and a local teacher of criminology are interpreting the evidence. Perry notices a library book that leads him to the librarian Ellen Monteith who says she recently married Sabin making him a bigamist. Ellen is arrested while a Coroner's Inquest is called to determine cause of death. Coroner Andy Templet runs a very informal inquest where Perry re-interprets the evidence.

Hans Breel is a diamond cutter who is prepared to go to any lengths to raise cash. He's a heavy gambler and loan shark William Walker wants Breel to make good on his losses of $15,000. Breel makes a deal with Irene Bedford who has a fabulous uncut diamond that if cut properly, could be worth $100,000. Breel has offered to pay her only $15,000 for it and then cons a diamond broker, Virginia Trent, into paying him substantially more- $30,000. However, the diamond is considered a very difficult diamond to cut as it might shatter. He loses the first $15,000 in a poker game and when he tries to cut the diamonds it shatters, vastly reducing its value. At around the same time, Perry Mason is approached by Sarah Werner who is searching for her missing husband Hugo who lost her daughters inheritance of $90,000 on gambling debts. It doesn't take Paul Drake very long to realize that Breel and Hugo Werner are the same person. When Breel is found dead, there is no shortage of possible culprits.

Eva Martel is hired by Melvin Slater to impersonate Helen Reynolds. He assures her there is nothing illegal going on and her aunt, Agnes Nulty, is free to stay with her. All Eva has to do is live in Helen's apartment, wear her clothes and just generally pretend to be her. After a few a days Slater's wife Barbara comes to the apartment looking for Slater to collect child support money from him. This along with the fact they are being watched causes Eva and her aunt to become concerned and decide to seek legal advice. Perry Mason tells them that while their activities might be innocent, anything illegal Slater might be up to could result in them being accomplices. He also tells the aunt she should get rid of the gun she admitted to carrying. Perry forces Slater to have Helen Reynolds come to his office to sign a document to indemnify the women from any charges. They then return to the apartment only to find Slater shot in the forehead. It's Eva and Agnes who are charged and Perry defends them.

Episode 14

Tom Wyatt has developed a treatment for gill fever, a disease in tropical fish. His friend and ex-boss Frederick Rollins has sold his tropical fish supply business to Jack Huxley who takes it from him and asks a chemist, Darrell Metcalf to analyze it and reproduce it for him. Wyatt and Rollins consult Perry Mason and are told that scientific discoveries done on behalf of the company become the intellectual property of the purchaser. Wyatt is angered by it all making off the cuff death threats and when Huxley is found dead, he is charged with murder. Wyatt is found with a cut hand that appears to have been cut when he broke a window into the Huxley offices plus Huxley's secretary Sally Wilson is engaged to Wyatt and forced to work late that night with Huxley who made a pass at her. Perry defends him and there are several others who would have liked to see him dead, including his wife Norah and his business partner who tries to steal the business with a story about a phony deal with Huxley's wife.

Bob Wallace breaks off his engagement to Millie Crest after involving her in an embezzlement scheme. Millie hurriedly leaves town and gives a lift to Fern Driscoll, who tries to hijack the car, causing it to plunge down a canyon. Fern is killed and Millie assumes her identity and travels on to Los Angeles, where she is contacted by a shady insurance investigator, Carl Davis. Davis tries to recover incriminating letters from Fern/Millie, who knows nothing about them. That evening Millie protects herself by stabbing an intruder with an icepick. The intruder is Davis, who later contacts Millie and threatens to harm her if she doesn't produce the letters. Davis is representing Senator Baylor, up for re-election, who wanted his son separated from Fern Driscoll. Millie sends Perry Mason to represent her in this matter. Davis dies and Millie is charged with his murder.

Episode 16

The District Attorney in Waring City, Brander Harris, hires Perry Mason to help him out after a crude attempt at blackmailing him begins to interfere with his investigation into corruption around a hospital construction. Harris was called to a meeting by Leora Matthews who offered him information. Once there however, she puts him in a comprising position and a photographer snaps a photo. Matthews was working for Marshall Scott and when he's found dead, Brander Harris is the prime suspect. Perry tells him he must surrender to the police and he soon finds himself the acting DA running the grand jury on his client's behalf. The grand jury room serves as the ideal setting for Perry to get information on those who took kickbacks on the hospital deal. Information that comes in handy at Brander Harris' preliminary hearing. At the Harris trial the people involved in the graft make it appear that Harris himself was involved by overseeing the graft.

Helen Harvey is engaged to be married to Stacey Chandler despite her Aunt Florence Harvey's misgivings. She begins to have her own doubts when she receives a copy of a magazine article describing Stacey as a con man. Aunt Florence's husband has been missing for several years and she will soon be seeking court authority to have him declared legally dead. She is convinced that Chandler is only after the money Helen is to inherit as a result. Stacey was working with Margo Lawrence as a partner in the con but he plans to leave her for her own good as he has genuinely fallen for her. Stacey is approached by Irene Wallace who has a cigarette lighter from Helen's missing uncle saying she knows his whereabouts. For $10,000 she will forget about the uncle but Stacey turns the information over to Helen who visits Irene. That doesn't stop Irene, however, as she is working for Helen's Aunt Florence. When Irene is found dead, Helen is charged and Perry defends her.

Comedian Danny Ross is certain his latest idea for a new television show will be a hit and return him to former glory. He's outraged, however, when he learns the man he trusted to sell the show to network executives, Charles Goff, has betrayed him and successfully sold the idea but it doesn't include a role for Danny. He visits Perry Mason with his diminutive sidekick Freddie Green but as there was nothing in writing, Perry tells him it will be complicated. When Goff is found dead, however, the murder weapon has Freddie's fingerprints on it. Goff is stuffed in the knee hole of his desk with a gunshot wound to the head and there is no sign of a struggle in the office. Danny refuses to accept that his pal would have anything to do with murder. Perry believes he's innocent and agrees to defend him but he is forced to interpret the jive talk used by those involved in the case and several people have reason to hate Danny.

Peter Baxter's family is shocked to learn that he prepared a new will shortly before his death in a tragic fire leaving everything to his caretaker, James Hing. Kenneth Baxter and his cousin Stuart Baxter are particularly distressed and have every intention of challenging the validity of the will in court. James Hing approaches Perry Mason to help him defend the will and his inheritance but he isn't being entirely truthful with him. In fact, James is arrested for Baxter's murder, and the convoluted truth finally emerges. Wanting to test his heirs' loyalty and respect, Baxter planned to fake his death. Hing admits to setting the fire, but Baxter was not supposed to die. Perry takes on the case knowing that someone other than his client made it impossible for Baxter to leave the burning house.

Perry Mason becomes involved in the case of a Australian Bishop who is searching for a young woman who was abandoned as a baby. Bishop Mallory has been putting vague ads in local newspapers to try to find the woman, the granddaughter of the rich Charles Burroughs, who disinherited his son when he married and the son died before the missing granddaughter was born; the baby was then given up for adoption. He thinks he's found the right woman in Carol Delaney although she doesn't believe him, but it's clear that others have interest in the Burroughs estate, especially Wallace Lang, who has the Bishop beaten up to get him to leave town. Burroughs himself thinks he's already found his granddaughter and is prepared to change his will in her favor regardless of the relationship. When Burroughs is found stabbed to death in his study, Carol is charged with murder and Perry defends her. Plus, the Bishop is missing.

At a script read-through of a new play by Ernest Royce, the last act has been stolen. Royce has words with the producer, John Gifford, and the publicist, Jim West, who think the new play is dreadful. None of the Royce written plays produced by Gifford have had good revues or produced a profit. The new play may even be a roman a clef that could be hurtful to the real people characterized. Royce threatens Gifford with exposure if the play is not produced. Meanwhile, Royce is having an affair with Faith Foster, the ingenue of the play. Tough guy Frank Brooks who has a mob related background has $75K, and his girlfriend Faith, invested in the play, and he wants his assets back. Brooks rather rough request for his money back to Royce is recorded on Royce's Dictaphone. Royce is murdered, and Brooks consults with Perry Mason, who is concerned the New York City mob may be involved.

Nurse Edith Douglas arrives home to find her younger brother Mark there. Their parents died when he was young with the result he is always in trouble. Mark tells her he is hiding because he owes several thousand dollars. He convinces her to help him steal an audio tape recording her employer Dr. David Craig makes of his sessions with patients. Mark wants a recording of the patient Peter Heywood, a successful aviation executive, whose wife Barbara believes he is having an affair. When Dr. Craig finds his office ransacked and five tapes missing, he contacts Perry about the situation. Paul tells them it appears someone made a wax copy of a key. Dr. Craig suddenly leaves Perry's office, realizing only Edith could have done it. He goes to her apartment where he confronts her and Mark. Mark hands over the five tapes but Dr. Craig doesn't realize Mark made copies until he receives a call from Mr. Heywood who thinks Dr. Craig is in on the blackmail. When Mark is found murdered with a 38, Dr. Craig who owned a 38 is charged.

After running away from the Bayliss Sanitarium, Evelyn Forbes makes her way to Los Angeles to confront her ex-husband Clinton Forbes. She wants to get her fortune back but there seems to be little chance of that. Evelyn's brother Arthur Cartwright hires Paul Drake to find her and then follows her to Los Angeles to bring her back to his home. It also gives him a chance to see his ex-wife Polly, who left him for Forbes. Cartwright consults Perry about estate law, particularly if a will is affected should a man be executed for a criminal act. He tells Perry that Forbes is a crook who marries rich women to get his hands on their money. He assures Perry that he's not about to commit a capital crime but when Clinton Forbes is found dead, it's his sister Evelyn who is charged with murder. It's the dead man's dog, also killed, that provides the clue Perry needs to identify the true murderer.

Contractor George Andrews is having trouble with building inspectors on his construction site who tell him to ask Wilfred Borden for his help. Borden styles himself as being in public relations but is in fact a political fixer who won't hesitate to bribe officials who are giving clients a hard time. He is also an amateur photographer who works with models. They agree to a deal but as Andrews leave Borden's home, he's nearly run off the road by another car. He rushes to help and finds an attractive young woman lying on the grass. He gives her a ride home and then goes to Perry Mason's office for legal advice. Concerned that someone else might have been in the car, they head to Borden's house to try to find her but are locked out by dogs. Perry quickly determines the woman Andrews picked up was not who she said she was and the next day they learn that Borden is dead. Andrews is charged with murder when the police find the murder weapon in his car and Perry defends him.

Harry Bright and Chuck Clark have been partners for over 30 years and made quite a bit of money. Harry is concerned that Clark's new young wife Margaret and her brother Howard Roper may be cheating him and his friend Chuck out of their money. He goes to see Chuck, but Chuck isn't there and Harry gets into a dispute with Howard that ends with Harry shooting into the ground. Harry consults Perry Mason, who suggests that he dissolve the partnership, which would mean a complete accounting of all assets. Harry doesn't want that; he's not angry with his business partner, only the gold-digger he married. Harry receives evidence from Salty Sims that Margaret and Howard aren't siblings and tells Chuck. When Margaret is found dead in her bedroom, Harry is charged with murder. The bullet in the body came from the same gun as a bullet found in the ground. Chuck asks Perry to defend Harry.

Episode 26

Sylvia Oxman is desperate to retrieve the $7,500 in IOUs she signed over at the Clover Club poker room. She is convinced that her ex-husband Frank Oxman will try to get his hands on them and use them to have her labeled an unfit mother thereby getting custody of their son Peter. Poker room owner Danny Barker isn't going to make it easy for her, however, suggesting that he will sell the IOUs to the highest bidder asking $25,000. Sylvia's grandmother Matilda Benson and her son Robert call on Perry Mason to seek his assistance on Sylvia's behalf and Perry and Paul drake are soon investigating. Perry runs a bluff on Danny Barker to force him to turn over the IOUs at face value. Danny's partner Charles Duncan intervenes to make sure they get their money but nothing untoward takes place. Before long Danny Baker is found dead in his office, killed with Sylvia's gun. Despite the odds, Perry takes on her case and roots out the real killer.

In San Francisco, Claire Allison and Dick Benedict try to avoid Martin Selkirk, who wants to break up their romance. Claire is upset because she is receiving letters from Selkirk containing articles about women who jilted their fiancés. The envelopes appear to have been addressed on a printing press. Selkirk finds them and breaks Benedict's jaw in a fight with brass knuckles. In Los Angeles Lorraine Jennings, Selkirk's former wife, contacts Claire offering help if Claire will testify on Lorraine's behalf in a custody battle over young David Selkirk. Claire visits them while Dick recuperates in the hospital. Claire spends the night at the Jennings home and hears a mysterious shot fired in the night. When she gets up to get a blanket, she finds a printing press in the linen closet. Claire leaves the house contacting Perry the next morning. The next day Ralph Jennings walks with a pronounced limp saying it is arthritis and Selkirk is found murdered at his beach house. When Claire is charged, Perry must deal with young David's deadly toy to solve the case.

Collector Curtis Runyan owns a precious art object called "The Spanish Cross," which Felix Karr wishes to buy but they cannot agree on the price. After Karr leaves, Runyan and his secretary Everett Wormser return to find the cross missing. Runyan suspects that it was taken by Jimmy Morrow who is working nearby. Jimmy who is on probation for grand theft auto, works as a gardener for the Runyans. Wheelchair bound Grace Runyan and her husband are estranged, and she has taken a motherly interest in Jimmy. Runyan threatens to call the police and slaps Jimmy who knocks Runyan down. He runs to Mrs. Runyan and then runs off. Felix Karr calls on Perry Mason to defend Jimmy, who has disappeared but Perry refuses his money. However, Perry contacts his father who is a drunk but tells Perry Jimmy did not even steal the car and he knows who did. Later, Runyan is shot and Jimmy is seen holding a gun over the body. Perry must first find his client before he can defend him in court.

Perry Mason is taken by surprise while working late one night when a beautiful blond enters his office from the balcony. When Perry turns on the lights, she quickly tosses her revolver into a flower pot next door. She claims to be Virginia Colfax, a secretary who works in the office next door. She says she had to make a quick exit when her boss' wife showed up unexpectedly. The next day, the man from the office next door, Ed Garvin, consults Perry on a proxy battle with his ex-wife. He also assures Perry that he has only recently re-married and is certainly not having an affair with an attractive blond. When Garvin returns to his office he finds the gun which he locks in his desk as he must leave. When Perry determines that his quickie Mexican divorce may not be legal, he tells Garvin and his new bride to go to Mexico and stay there until he can figure out just what is going on. The next thing Perry hears is that the first Mrs. Garvin has been found murdered in San Diego and Ed has been arrested. For his part, Ed says he returned to the States after getting a phone call from Della Street instructing him to do so.

After Ruth Prescott's husband Walter refuses to give her the divorce she's asked for, she runs out of the house and is nearly run over by a furniture delivery truck that rams a parked car severely injuring the occupant. Ruth is convinced that her husband tried to have her killed to get his hands on what is left of her inheritance. She calls Jimmy McLain who she is in love with who tells her to come to his apartment. When she arrives, Jimmy is gone but his gun holster is there - empty. She returns home to destroy love letters from Jimmy McLain but finds her husband dead on the floor and a gun lying on the carpet beside him. While burning the love letters, Walter's secretary Margaret Swaine walks in and leaves after seeing the body. Ruth takes the gun and a toppled bird cage with an injured canary. She consults Perry Mason who puts Paul Drake on the case to track down the people involved. Paul finds the the car that was struck has been found with the driver dead. Ruth is charged with her husband's murder and it's up to Perry to sort out just what happened.
