Neville owns and runs a Blackpool fish and chip shop when a solicitor comes to see him. Neville was brought up in an orphanage during the war but he is brought the news that his estranged father has just died. Neville travels down to Littlehampton where his father made seaside rock. He is now the part-owner of the business but it is not going well and has debts of £30 000. He also meets a half-sister, Dorothy, with whom he has an inauspicious initial meeting. Finally, there comes the news that the bank wants its money.

Neville has sold his fish-and-chip shop and is now the boss of the seaside rock factory. The finances are still tight and they don't have any money to buy sugar. Neville decides to approach the bank for an overdraft but finds a very disenchanted bank manager. Fortunately, an old friend of Neville's father offers to give him the money but there is a catch: Neville must marry his daughter. He is not looking forward to it but she is very keen, even talking about babies. However, he manages to come up with a better plan.
Episode 3

Production has started in the factory but the first batch of seaside rock has to be ditched as there is a spelling error. Neville looks for a way to increase sales and decides to have a cross-channel swim to publicise the company. He organises a training session down at the sea. However, it turns out none of the staff, including Neville, can swim. The stakes escalate when a government minister organises nationwide publicity for the event.

Dorothy and Neville have been invited to a dinner dance and Neville is trying to practise his dancing with Wilf's help. Neville hasn't got anybody to go with so, in desperation, he goes to a dating agency. He is in for a shock when he sees who he is initially matched with, Dorothy! They are given a second pair of partners but that doesn't work out as expected.

Neville decides to be the company's welfare officer for the workers to approach if they have any problems. However, it doesn't quite go as planned when they start seeing him. A friend of Marilyn's leaves her baby at the factory for a few hours for Marilyn to mind when she goes for an interview. When Dorothy finds the baby she takes him home and Neville helps look after him.
Episode 6

Neville is cleaning out his father's old car and finds it has plenty of memories. He asks Dorothy to teach him to drive but he is not a good pupil. After a few lessons, he tries to book in for a licence test but it turns out to be much more complicated than you would think. Even the road test turns out to be a disaster.

Neville has started to learn French and feels that the company should start exporting their products to the continent. Dorothy and Neville travel to Paris. Things start off badly when the hotel puts them in the same room, and there are no spare rooms. When they go to dinner with a French trade minister, the alcohol flows freely.
