Three recurring characters encounter various mysterious and bizarre monsters and creatures in the world of Ultra Q.

Over 8,000 years ago, the Daos civilization flourished in Southern China. The Daos Empire consisted in three tribes: Dai, Shura (ancestors of today's humanity) and Gorma who lived harmonously. However, one day the Gorma Tribe tried to take over the Empire. Thus began the war between the Gorma and the Dai Tribe. The battle continued for 5,000 years, led by the Gorma Triumvirate. The Mythical Chi Beasts appeared to oppose the Gorma, whose magical powers had increased to the point where they could turn themselves into monsters. Five Dai warriors' chi powers had increased to the point where they could control the Mythical Chi Beasts. The war ended with the disappearance of both the Dai and Gorma Tribes. In 1993, the Gorma Tribe, one of the Daos' two missing branches, revived to take over the world. To counter them, Master Kaku assembled a team of five youths with high levels of chi. They became the Dairangers of present time.

Johnny Sokko is an ordinary boy whose life takes an extraordinary turn on a boat voyage when he meets Jerry Mano, a young man who befriends him. The boat is suddenly sunk by the minions of the terrorist organization known as the Gargoyle Gang, who have a habit of using giant monsters and giant robots in their several attacks. Finding themselves on a Gargoyle island base, the pair meet up with a scientist who has constructed the most advanced and powerful giant robot of all. Concerned that his creation will be used for evil purposes, the scientist shows the pair the robot and its wrist watch voice controller which is programmed to imprint on the first person who speaks into it and make that person into the only person who can control the robot from that point on. Impulsively, Johnny speaks into it himself, thus becoming that person. With the robot's help, they escape from the island and Johnny learns that his new friend, Jerry, is an agent of the worldwide intelligence and anti-terrorist organization known as Unicorn, which is dedicated to both fighting, and defeating, the Gargoyle Gang. With no other alternative open to them, Unicorn quickly recruits Johnny as a full and regular agent. Now, Johnny has a vital role in this new war as the one person who can bring the tremendous strength and weapons of Giant Robot (the name that he gives the robot) to bear against the forces of evil.

It has been 10 years since the fateful battle with Unicron. Many of the Decepticons who fought in the battle against Unicron have joined forces with the Autobos to mine for Energon, an alternate energy source. But a new source of evil has a risen, Alpha Q who plans to steal the Energon from the Autobots with the help of Scorponok and the Terrorcons. This new evil is trying to revive Megatron and Unicron in order to rekindle the old flames of war.

A long time ago, a group of ninjas (Sasuke, Saizou, Seikai, Tsuruhime, Jiraiya) imprison Nurarihiyon and his band of Youkai. Many years later, Modern-day Sasuke and Saizou accidentally release the Youkai from their imprisonment. Tsuruhime comes along and tells the Hapless duo of their lineage. The ancestors appear and give them their Doron Changers. Sasuke, Saizou, and Tsuruhime then go to find the last two descendants (Modern-day Seikai and Jiraiya).
