They fall in love but keep the affair secret for a year. Informed at a birthday dinner of the wedding intentions, her children have strong reservations. In-living junior Leo fears for his meal ticket, firstborn businessman Patrick suspects a gold-digger, their Lesbian sister Della is just confused, finally there's their out of favor father.

Julia brings Benjamin to her Devon home, and he is taken aback to see the extent of her wealth. The visit is disrupted by a tense confrontation with Ted, who questions Julia's motivations for forming a new relationship. Julia opts to return to London, and asks to meet Benjamin's friends - but when he refuses to show her where he lives, she begins to fear he is hiding something from her. Della turns up unannounced on her ex's doorstep, and is put under pressure by her brother into digging up dirt on Benjamin.

The anniversary of Marsha's husband's death brings the former friends together, both avoiding the Ted-shaped elephant in the room. Marsha clearly wants to be forgiven by Julia, but any hope she has of this is ruined by the arrival of Benjamin. Marsha is dispatched, and questions whether her new life with Ted was worth the loss of Julia's friendship. When Ted learns where she's been - that she's even met Benjamin - he explodes, and Marsha realises that he's jealous and can't bear his ex-wife to be with another man. Benjamin's attempts to settle into Devon life are upended by the arrival of Julia's oldest children, Patrick and Della, who request a private audience with their mother. When they show her evidence of Benjamin's indiscretions Julia sends them away, and promises her youngest son Leo that she'll break up with Benjamin. But when Benjamin returns Julia assures him that everything is fine, and the kids just wanted to talk to her about her villa. Over the course of a day she sets traps for him, determined to know his game...

Julia decides not to tell her children she is engaged when they visit at Christmas, leaving Benjamin feeling rejected. However, she ends up letting it slip over dinner - and none of her children are happy for her. Ted angrily questions Benjamin's motives, and cynically proposes to Marsha in an act of oneupmanship. When she spots his selfish reasons and rejects him, it drives him to start drinking again, as well as urging his children to prevent the wedding from going ahead for the sake of their inheritance.
