When Holly (Amanda Bynes) is 16, her father takes a job in Japan and she moves in with her strait-laced sister Valerie (Jennie Garth) in New York City. Val finally has both a great career and a great boyfriend in a carefully organized life on the Upper West Side when Holly moves in and tries to become a part of her sister's fabulous life.

Jamie King (Jamie Foxx) is an aspiring actor from Terrell, Texas, who has come to Los Angeles to pursue a career in entertainment. To support himself, he works in his family's hotel, the financially strapped King's Tower, which is owned by his aunt and uncle, Helen and Junior King (Ellia English and Garrett Morris).

The Malloys might seem like your average suburban family but things are far from normal. Jack and Jennie hardly speak to each other and their kids present a unique set of challenges. In addition, Jack hates his job. For advice and solitude Jack heads to the basement and turns to the only thing he trusts: Mr Floppy, a talking stuffed rabbit.

This WB drama is named after two of the six main characters, each with a name rather suggesting the other gender: Jaqueline 'Jack' Barrett and David 'Jill' Jillefski, who gradually realize they were in love at first sight. The other main characters are brilliant but insecure med student Barto; philosopher-barman Mikey, a natural womanizer who cultivates immaturity and disarming charm; Broadway-actress/dancer Audrey, who becomes Barto's girl; and Elisa Cronkite, Jack's colleague at the TV station.

Frantic Jewish divorcée Fran Reeves falls madly in love with Riley Douglas Martin, a hunky contractor half her age, who moves in with her and her nasty ex Ted's two adolescent children, timid med-school dropout Joshua 'Josh' and bitchy high-school girl Allison. They all have a hard-enough time finding out where they fit in this reconstituted, unofficial household, not an actual family, and things are even worse when outsiders wonder or ignore how it all works, given the shifted generations, Riley being barely older then his 'step-kids', actually an ideal big brother if only he were a sibling rather than the provider. Alliances and antagonisms shift, but ultimately true love triumphs and things work out.
