Saudi Arabia: Expedition Volcanic Underworld

First Steve gazes at the archaeological treasures of Hegra, the Ancient second largest Nabataean city, like famous Petra, where no tourist ever sets foot. Then his team flies by helicopter to join Saudi geologists Mahmoud Al-Shanti and Hala Alwagdani, looking for holes in the vast volcanic zone around, to enter long lava tubes. While ropes expert Aldo Kane prepares a rescue mission from the other side, Steve's party is amazed to find it's the longest in Arabia, and holds unprecedented traces from prehistorical visits from various wildlife and cavemen.

Moukalaba Doudou National Park near Gabon's coast needs Unicef World Heritage status to be properly protected against (often illegal) logging and poaching. Steve and his canoe team help an Italian biologist make a strong case by finding rare species in the never-explored part, up a wild river whose rapids daunt the natives forever. Lots of hardship and detours through the jungle, as the rain season resulted in high water, are rewarded with evidence the iconic chimpanzee and surprising species, like the country's only land turtle an various crocodiles.

Steve's camera crew joins Mexican friend Mauricio Hoyos's marine biologists team on an expedition to collect 'field' data to justify better protection and possible extension of a large Mexican oceanic nature reserve around a desolate archipelago. They hope to prove it's a crucial breeding area for sharks, thus key to conservation in the East Pacific in general. After a troublesome test of new equipment, with failures, at the best known island, they venture to the unexplored one. It's a a sea mountain, and meets their expectations: it's as rich as any coral reefs, including a shark nursery.
