After spending the winter in New York, Theodore Roosevelt returns to the lawless Dakota Badlands, hoping to continue expanding his beloved Elkhorn Ranch. But the moment Roosevelt steps off the train, he finds himself thrust into a violent range war. His old adversary, the Marquis de Morés, has placed hundreds of cattle on Elkhorn land, a deliberate act of provocation. The Marquis hopes to strong-arm Roosevelt into selling the grazing rights, but the headstrong Roosevelt balks, leading to a wild shootout. Amid all this trouble, Roosevelt's partners, Bill Sewall and Wilmot Dow, return from Maine with their wives in tow. The women set to work transforming the rustic Elkhorn cabin into a proper home, but their presence in the cramped quarters is somewhat unnerving to the recently widowed Roosevelt. In the town of Medora, newspaper owner Arthur Packard helps his new assistant, Johnny O'Hara, fend off a brutal gunslinger.
