Each episode is a two round, single elimination per round donut competition between three teams, each consisting of a professional donuteer and an assistant of his/her choice, leaving one team standing at the end as the Donut Showdown champion and the winner of $10,000. Round one is the mystery ingredient round. In season one, each donuteer, after drawing lots to determine order, chooses three ingredients from a table of twelve, those three ingredients which must be used to make two dozen donuts. In season two, all are assigned the same one mystery ingredient. In round two, each team must make two dozen each of three different types of donuts on a theme presented to them. In season two, they are additionally provided yet another mystery ingredient, the same for each team, that must be incorporated into one type of donut. Beyond the minimum requirements of the number of donuts presented within the time allotment, the three member panel of judges evaluates the donuts on taste, presentation, originality and where applicable use of the mystery ingredient(s) and adherence to the theme.
