Continuing a weeklong series of new-season analysis and previews, here's my take on how I see the new Tuesday lineups playing out. Tuesday in a Nutshell: The no-brainer: CBS will continue to rule with its NCIS-NCIS: LA combo, and the new procedural-with-a-twist Unforgettable should fit right in, possibly putting a dent in ABC's midseason surprise Body of Proof, which roughly targets the same audience for female-driven crime dramas. Fox should make significant inroads with the younger demos, especially if Glee gets back its groove in this transitional graduation season (for some characters, anyway). The delightful New Girl deserves to break out, and may bolster the fortunes of my favorite comedy from last season, Raising Hope. On NBC, The Biggest Loser provides stability if not much excitement ...

Ratings: Mentalist Hits Yet Another High, Somehow Even Besting According to Jim

Tuesday's tallies: 8 pm/ETNCIS topped the hour with its second-largest audience ever, 18.54 million total viewers. House led the demos, but dipped a bit in viewers, to 12.4 mil. ABC's Santa Claus came to town and found nearly nine million folks waiting for him, while Biggest Loser placed fourth with about eight mil in its first hour. 9 pmThe Mentalist continues to see bigger and bigger audiences, hitting yet another series high: 18.77 million viewers (a week-to-week surge of 18 percent). And that was with According to Jim (a fourth place-worthy 5.8 mil) now in the mix! In third (behind Biggest Loser's rear end), Fringe slipped a hair, to 8.69 mil. 10 pmWithout a Trace (12.2 million viewers) and SVU (10.3 mil, No. 1 in demos) both enjoyed gains of about 18 percent. Question: According to Jim? Seriously? Seriously?Answer: Don't get me started. Incidentally, an executive at ABC saw my story last week and offered some insight into the renewal. "We have been told this is being done because of the soft syndication market for comedies. All of the off-network stations that have the rights to According to Jim would be required to buy the new episodes. Since it will make so much money in syndication, it's a moot point. It's a win for the company, but not for the network." But what about me?! Why am I never considered in these decisions?!

Courtney Thorne-Smith's Pregnancy Written into Show

When ABC’s According to Jim returns midseason, there will be a new, reality-based plotline. Cheryl (Courtney Thorne-Smith) and Jim (Jim Belushi) are expecting a baby, to coincide with Thorne-Smith’s real-life pregnancy. "We are going to go for a pregnancy because Courtney is pregnant," Belushi told TV Guide at the Camp Ronald McDonald 15th Annual Family Halloween Carnival on Sunday. But that doesn’t mean that Smith won’t be sporting pillows over the belly or a dishcloth dangling in front as they build to the big reveal. Ugly Beauty Weds Jerry O'Connell, More Love Notes

How refreshing. A low-profile celebrity marriage ceremony. Held in mere America, no less! Ugly Betty beauty Rebecca Romijn and Crossing Jordan cutie Jerry O'Connell tied the knot on Saturday in an intimate ceremony in quant li'l Los Angeles. "It was a perfect celebration, and Jerry and I couldn't be happier," Romijn, who previously was wed to John Stamos, tells People.... Courtney Thorne-Smith is expecting this winter her first child with husband Roger Fishman. An ABC spokesperson has yet to respond to TVGuide.com's request for comment on how this will coincide with the production schedule for According to Jim, which was only recently uncancelled.

Getting revived feels good. Very good. ABC’s According to Jim has been officially renewed.“I’m really grateful,” star Jim Belushi tells TV Guide. “I love the show, I love the cast, and ABC and Touchstone have been really great.”ABC was clearly on the fence regarding the family comedy, which went from 10 million viewers in its first season in 2001 to 6.6 million last season. Was there a fan campaign under way to bring back According to Jim that no one told me about? 'Cause for some inexplicable reason, the presumed-dead sitcom has just been picked up for an 18-episode seventh season, an ABC rep confirms.No reason was given for the 11th-hour reprieve, so that leaves us to speculate amongst ourselves. ABC Sitcoms' 9 pm Time Slot Is Lost to Lost

ABC has temporarily sidelined (because I know how some of you bristle at the word "shelved") the Wednesdays-at-9 sitcombo of According to Jim and In Case of Emergency so as to lead in to the fresh Feb. 14 and 21 episodes of Lost with encores of the show's previous eppy. (For example, "Not in Portland" will air this Wednesday following Knights of Prosperity.)Now, I could be snarky here and say, "Hey, Lost, how about that much-ballyhooed 'No Repeats' mantra?" But 1) slotting a "refresher" episode in front of a new one isn't what they meant, and 2) I'm a better person than that. The worst part of this? You will have to wait another two weeks for my saucy Q&A with ICE guest star Jane Seymour.

In this Wednesday's ratings showdown:• Averaging 8.56 million total viewers — a boost of 1.3 mil from the week prior — a double helping of According to Jim topped the 8 o'clock hour, besting CBS' heavily publicized Armed & Famous (8.22 mil).• Friday Night Lights (6.56 mil, up 300K) is still shining bright, with its most-watched episode since TSMO30O (that special Monday, Oct. 30, outing).• Opposite a Criminal Minds repeat and Deal or No Deal — and perhaps buzz-killed by the unfunny presidential address — both The Knights of Prosperity (5.27 million, down 1.9 mil) and In Case of Emergency (5.81 mil, down 480,000) took hits in their second weeks. As Fox's Wednesday-night coverage of the Sugar Bowl (averaging 14 million total viewers) scored a No. 1 ranking in each prime-time hour...— King of Queens/a Two and a Half Men repeat (8.5 mil) placed No. 2 at 8, followed by According to Jim's season opener (7.28 mil) and Friday Night Lights (which, with 6.28 mil, enjoyed its best numbers since that special Monday, Oct. 20, outing, and its third-largest audience ever). Taye Diggs' Crazy Day to Conclude on ABC.com

Was ABC programming guru Stephen McPherson reading your comments in this blog over the weekend? Variety is reporting that Day Break, pulled from the network's schedule effective immediately, will finish up its 13-episode run on ABC.com. ABC has also specified that Day Break will be replaced for the next two Wednesdays not just by mere sitcom repeats but by holiday-themed sitcom repeats... of According to Jim and George Lopez. (Please. Stop. Specifying.) Starting Jan. 3, In Case of Emergency and Knights of Prosperity debut and will fill the 9 pm hour. NBC's Heroes: The Show's Secrets Unmasked!

Starting Feb. 14, ABC's Tuesday-night schedule will be exactly one-third Jim Belushi. According to Jim will air at 8 and 9 pm ET, with Rodney in between at 8:30 pm, and George Lopez and Boston Legal bringing up the rear at 9:30 and 10 pm, respectively. To kick off this new lineup, the network is preempting its 8 pm Jim on the 14th and replacing it with A Charlie Brown Valentine. Yes, that ought to really clear things up in viewers' minds.
