The Hunger Games was, fittingly, on fire at the box office, becoming the third-biggest box office opening of all time and the largest opening ever for a non-sequel.
The action film, based on the best-selling novel of the same name and starring Jennifer Lawrence, grossed an estimated $155 million, according to Box Office Mojo. That opening ranks behind only the final Harry Potter film ($169.2 million) and The Dark Knight ($158.4 million). The Hunger Games also holds the records for highest March opening and highest-grossing movie ever for studio Lionsgate.

Coming in a distant second was last weekend's top film, 21 Jump Street, which took in $21.3 million. The Loraxranked third, grabbing $13.1 million. John Carterfollowed in fourth place with $5 million. Act of Valorcompleted the top 5, drawing $2 million.
At No. 6, Project X grabbed $1.95 million. A Thousand Words was close on its heels, ranking seventh with $1.92 million.
Rounding out the top 10: The weekend's only other new release, October Baby (No. 8, $1.7 million), Silent House (No. 9, $1.4 million) and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (No. 10, $1.3 million).
