Cameron Douglas Denied Bail in Federal Drug-Dealing Case

The 31-year-old son of Michael Douglas was denied bail and a chance to enter outpatient addiction treatment Thursday, according to The Associated Press.

U.S. District Judge Richard A. Berman disagreed with Cameron Douglas' lawyers, who argued he should be released on $1 million bail to receive treatment for heroin addiction. The judge said that Douglas' needs were being met in jail and that he didn't believe outpatient treatment "is likely to be successful or to resolve Mr. Douglas' long-term addiction issues."

Cameron Douglas pleads guilty to drug dealing

Douglas pleaded guilty last month to dealing large amounts of methamphetamine and cocaine after being arrested July 28 as part of a Drug Enforcement Administration investigation. Investigators say Cameron was paid tens of thousands of dollars for dealing, according to court papers obtained by the AP.

At a hearing earlier this month, Douglas' defense lawyer, Daniel M. Gitner, attributed his client's problems to "a very dysfunctional upbringing."

Nicholas M. DeFeis, another member of Douglas' defense team, said Douglas "didn't benefit from his celebrity."

Douglas faces at least 10 years in prison when he is sentenced April 14. DeFeis refused to comment, and Gitner could not be reached for comment.
