Spotlight takes home the top prize of the 2016 Academy Awards.

The Best Picture category was the most open-ended going into the awards ceremony, with the three major guilds split on who the winner should be. Spotlight took the top prize at the SAGs and Independent Spirit Awards, but The Big Short won the Producers Guild of America statue and The Revenant took home the Golden Globe, BAFTA and Director's Guild top trophies.

Spotlight was an early favorite to win the award though and rode the wave of their Independent Spirit Awards win on Saturday into a victory at the Oscars.

"This film gave a voice to survivors, and this Oscar amplifies that voice, which we hope will become a choir that will resonate all the way to the Vatican. Pope Francis, it's time to protect the children and restore the faith," said producer Michael Sugar. "We would not be here today without the heroic efforts of our reporters. Not only do they affect global change, but they absolutely show us the necessary for investigative journalism," added producer Blye Pagon Faust.
