There are two concurrent arrivals to rural Victoria, Australia in 1874. The first is a bandit called Stingaree who has made his way from his regular stomping grounds of New South Wales; the second is renowned London composer Sir Julian Kent, accepting the invitation of a friend of a friend, Doris Clarkson whom he has never met, the wife of Hugh Clarkson, one of the region's richest men, who made his fortune by sheep farming. Mrs. Clarkson thinks herself a great singer and sees Sir Julian as her path to singing fame. When "Sir Julian" unexpectedly arrives at the Clarkson home, he hears the sweetest voice he has ever heard--however, it is the Clarksons' housekeeper singing: Hilda Bouverie, whom Mrs. Clarkson did not want to allow to audition for Sir Julian. Since her father passed four years ago, Hilda has relied on the Clarksons for her survival, having no one else in the world. Ironically, Hilda does not actually sing for Sir Julian-- but for Stingaree, who kidnapped Sir Julian after meeting him, so he could go to the Clarksons' to rob them. Stingaree falls in love not only with Hilda's singing, but also with Hilda the woman, and she falls in love with him. Stingaree then risks his own freedom to help Hilda reach her goal of singing fame.
