Since time immemorial, stretching back several generations, a deep-seated hatred has existed between two of Barcelona's wealthiest bourgeois families: the Balmers and the Lafuentes. Marta, the kind-hearted daughter of Don Rufino Balmer, returns home after years in a convent and attempts reconciliation, but love affairs, fights, and jealous murders ensue.
