Famed author Kenneth Bixby (Warren William) is on a tour of the US with his assistant Anne Rogers (Joan Blondell) to promote his latest romance novel. While in Cleveland, Ken receives a visit from Julie (Genevieve Tobin), a now-married old flame he hasn't seen since college days. Julie is still infatuated with Ken and sure she's the inspiration for his book's tragic heroine, and she remembers the promise they made in college that they would marry someday--although she's married to Harvey Wilson (Hugh Herbert), who is actually aware of his wife's infatuation (too aware: she constantly criticizes him by saying "Kenneth Bixby wouldn't do that") and wants to meet this paragon. Also aware of Julie's infatuation are Julie's sister Elizabeth (Helen Chandler) and Elizabeth's lawyer Arthur Westlake (Wallace Ford), who tell Anne about a scheme to keep Ken totally preoccupied while in Cleveland so Julie would have no chance to be alone with him, so a scandal could be averted. Ken might have his own opinions about how to handle the situation with Julie based on his feelings for her. Caught in the middle is Anne, who is faithful and loyal to Ken as his assistant, but who is also in love with him--a dichotomy which will factor into whom she helps in the situation.
