The film covers Sigmund Freud’s life from 1885-1890 when he was developing his early theories. A female patient exhibiting many different symptoms becomes a ‘test bed’ for his hypotheses. Wonderful monochrome photography from Douglas Slocombe suggesting fin de siècle Vienna and haunting Expressionist dream sequences.
