The successful Berlin lawyer and art lover Ulli Kanter surprises his partner Susanne Pauli with a very special idea: he has hired an artist to paint a large-format oil portrait of Susanne. Susanne is not particularly happy about this idea, however. Her unease escalates into open rejection when Ulli brings the artist home for dinner. It turns out that Markus Marberg is an old school friend of Susanne's. The catch: the chaotic Markus and the ambitious Susanne couldn't stand each other. When Markus also fills up the evening's entertainment with anecdotes about "achiever" Susanne, she has had enough. She makes it clear to Ulli that she will definitely not be a model for Markus. Ulli, on the other hand, finds Markus extremely likeable and even arranges new accommodation for the penniless painter with the cosmopolitan artist's widow Maria Kornblum. Susanne's teenage son Tobias is also totally enthusiastic about the new "friend of the family", not least because the creative Markus gives him practical tips on how to win the heart of his school friend Louise. Only Susanne reacts quite venomously whenever she meets Markus. But as the saying goes: those who love each other tease each other. When Markus jumps overboard on a pleasure boat during a summer party, Susanne rushes to help the supposedly drowning man despite her panicky fear of water. This dramatic event finally brings Markus and Susanne together. They begin a passionate affair. But then Susanne learns that Markus is not only an artist, but also an art forger - and that Ulli paid a lot of money for one of his copies. Although Markus wants to turn himself in to the police voluntarily, the deeply disappointed Susanne breaks up with him and confesses the affair to Ulli. Markus is sentenced to prison. On the day of his release, Ulli is already waiting for him outside the prison - and he has a huge surprise in store for the completely astonished Markus.
