Mathematician Margit Fließer (Jutta Hoffmann), in her mid-30s, single, with two children from different men, is an emancipated woman. But she is not happy. She lacks a partner, love, and tenderness, but also a father for her daughters. She is determined to choose the "third" man herself, and her life experiences reinforce this decision. After her mother's death, she became a deaconess student, but soon realized that this was not what she wanted. She went to the workers' and farmers' faculty; the lecturer Bachmann (Peter Köhnke) became her first great love, but also her even greater disappointment. Her first child is his. Then she gave all her love to a musician (Armin Mueller-Stahl) who is blind. She married him and had her second child. But this relationship also failed. After years of being alone, she now does not want to leave the third to fate. Her colleague Hrdlitschka (Rolf Ludwig) is the chosen one. She explores his life and character, so to speak. She likes him and wants him. But how should she tell him?
